Where do I get the update?
SensorGnome update files are linked to from the software releases page.
Download the appropriate update file and save it on your computer.
How do I install the update on a running SensorGnome?
- Connect to the SensorGnome with a USB cable
- browse to the web interface at http://192.168.7.2 If you are unable to do this,
you will need to power down the SensorGnome, remove the microSD card,
and follow the directions for installing the update on a microSD card, in the next section. - at the bottom of the web interface page is the Software Update section, which looks like this:

(Note: it doesn't matter what the update file is called - the uploader will give it the required name when
it saves it on the SensorGnome.)
- Click on the "Browse..." button to find the software update file you saved
- select the update file
- click on the "Upload this software update to your SensorGnome..." button
- wait for the web interface message that tells you the update file has been copied to the SensorGnome
- restart using one of these methods:
safe, slower: - scroll down the web interface to the bottom and click on "Reboot this SensorGnome".
This procedure avoids data loss by flushing the last few minutes of detection data to the
micro SD card, but it is also slower.
or faster, possible loss of last few minutes' detections:
- disconnect your computer from the SensorGnome
- cut power to the Sensorgnome
- repower the SensorGnome
- reconnect the SensorGnome to your computer.
- if it doesn't happen automatically, reload the web interface at http://192.168.7.2 and verify that the updated software is running
- you might need one more power cycle for the update to fully take effect (if so, the release notes for the update will indicate this.)
How do I install the update on a microSD card?
- put the microSD card in an SD card adapter
- insert the SD card adapter into your computer
- you should see a drive called SENSORGNOME; if not, your microSD card or SD adapter are faulty.
- copy the software update file you downloaded from sensorgnome.org to the SENSORGNOME drive
- on the SENSORGNOME drive, rename the software update file to exactly this name:
sensorgnome_update.tar.bz2
-
"safely remove" the SD adapter from your computer (this is the software eject step)
-
physically remove the SD adapter from your computer, then remove the micro SD card from the adapter
-
gently plug the micro SD card into the slot on the SensorGnome's beaglebone computer, with gold contacts
facing inward and toward the circuit board. You will hear/feel a gentle click if you do this correctly
-
repower the SensorGnome
-
reconnect to the SensorGnome with your computer
-
browse to the web interface at http://192.168.7.2 and verify that the updated software is running
-
you might need one more power cycle for the update to fully take effect
How do I tell whether the software update was actually performed?
After the SensorGnome installs a software update file, it renames it to
used_sensorgnome_update.tar.bz2
on the SENSORGNOME disk of the microSD drive. You can see this disk on a running SensorGnome by
attaching to the shared network drive at \\192.168.7.2\boot (when your computer is attached to the SensorGnome
via USB.)
